Although many people use the terms “cold sore” and “canker sore” interchangeably, they’re different. Unlike cold sores, canker sores are bacterial infections inside the mouth that are characterized by small, round, white areas surrounded by a sharp halo of red. And while cold sores are highly contagious, canker sores are not. We’ve compiled a list of 4 simple home remedies which you can try to help ease the suffering and heal the sores faster that work.
- Baking soda.Baking soda has antibacterial properties, and it can neutralize any acid in your mouth which may be adding to the canker sore trouble. ‘‘Reader’s Digest’’ recommends mixing 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 cup of warm water. Let the baking soda dissolve completely and then swish the solution around in your mouth and spit. Be sure to use up all of the mixture. Do this daily until the sores are gone.
- Aloe vera.Aloe vera also has antibacterial properties and helps sores heal quickly. Dr. Axe combines it with baking soda for his canker sore treatment. Thoroughly mix 1 teaspoon baking soda, 2 tablespoons aloe vera juice and 1/2 cup warm water. Swish this in your mouth and spit. Repeat until all of it is gone. Use daily until all the sores are gone.
- Milk of magnesia.Another easy home remedy recommended by the ‘‘Mayo Clinic’’ is to dab some milk of magnesia on the sores several times a day. This might not make them heal faster, but it should take the discomfort out.
- Honey. One of nature’s wonders, honey has amazing antibacterial properties combined with the ability to soothe. ‘‘Prevention’’ recommends applying honey directly to the canker sores after every meal.
Why suffer needlessly from nasty canker sores? You may find that one of these home remedies is the solution to quickly healing your painful mouth sores.
